Why not adapt a standard winch? You can, when the machine has room and the numbers line up. But OEM machines rarely leave much room. The drum ends up too wide for the frame, the oil ports face the wrong way, or the motor wants more flow than the pump can spare. Each fix on site adds brackets, hoses and risk. Designing the winch around the machine from the start avoids that, and it gives you one supplier answering for the whole unit.

This guide covers what can be customized, what to send for a quote, and how JST takes a custom winch from drawing to tested unit.

What can be customized

Drum and rope

The drum is usually the first thing that changes. Rope diameter, usable rope length and the number of layers set the drum's diameter and width. The rope groove can be cut to suit the rope, and the rope outlet direction can be set to match the machine's sheaves or fairlead. On a JSJ winch, the drum, drive and frame are all designed to the machine's load, rope system, installation space and hydraulic conditions.

Drive and brake

For hydraulic drive, the winch hydraulic motor is matched to the pressure and flow the machine can supply, then paired with a planetary gearbox to reach the pull and line speed you need. For electric drive, the motor, gearbox and brake are chosen in the same way around the available voltage and duty cycle.

Brakes and valves are part of the package. A spring-applied brake holds the load, and a counterbalance valve controls the load when rope pays out. A manual clutch is available if the rope needs to be pulled out by hand.

Frame and mounting interface

A custom winch has to fit the space the machine has, not the other way around. JST can build a winch with its own base frame or mount it between two side plates. On the compact NJ range, the NJ1.75 mounts between side plates and the JSJ1.75 comes with its own base. Oil port positions, flanges and the mounting interface can be changed to suit the machine. On NJ winches, the drum, mounting and ports can all be customized too.

A few limits stay fixed whatever the design. Keep at least four turns of rope on the drum of an NJ winch so the rope end can't pull out, and never use NJ winches to lift people.

Controls

Electric winches need a control to match the machine. On the JSD electric winch you can choose a pendant, control box, wireless remote, PLC interface and limit switches. Hydraulic winches are usually run from the machine's own valves, with the counterbalance valve and brake release built into the winch.

Hydraulic or electric drive?

Most custom winch systems we build are hydraulic, because the machines they go on already have hydraulic power and the duty is heavy. Electric drive makes sense when there's no hydraulic system, the duty is lighter, and steady electric power is easy to reach. If you're still deciding, our guide on hydraulic vs electric winch walks through the trade-offs.

What to send for a custom winch quote

The more of this you can send, the faster we can return a model direction:

  • Duty: pulling, towing or lifting. Lifting needs a separate check of the safety factor, brake and controlled lowering.
  • Rated and maximum pull on the first layer. First-layer pull is the starting point for selection.
  • Rope diameter and usable rope length.
  • Number of rope layers you expect on the drum. Pull drops as layers build up; see line pull by layer.
  • Line speed you need under load.
  • Power supply: hydraulic pressure and flow, or voltage and duty cycle for an electric winch.
  • Installation drawing, with the mounting space and rope outlet direction.
  • Working environment: outdoors, dusty, wet, or in a plant.

If you're replacing an existing winch, a photo of the nameplate and the mounting dimensions help us match it.

How JST builds a custom winch

Drawing and application review

Every project starts with your drawing and duty. Our engineers check the load, rope system, space and power supply together, because a change in one usually moves the others. A thicker rope means a bigger drum. A higher line speed means more flow. This is also where we look at how the winch hydraulic motor should be sized; see sizing the winch motor.

Model direction from the JSJ, NJ and JSD range

Next, we compare your data with the catalog. If a standard JSJ series, compact winch or custom electric winch base model is close, we start from it and change what needs changing. If nothing in the catalog fits, we design a custom build. Once the series and mounting interface are agreed, we send the sample data and installation drawing for your engineering review.

Testing

JST's dedicated test system records pulling force, line speed, hydraulic flow and oil temperature against the test condition you confirm. The test curves support project acceptance. They don't replace the structural and safety review of the complete machine, which stays with the machine builder. For more on what gets checked, see components and testing.

Typical applications

Custom winch systems from JST go into:

  • Construction equipment, including excavator and skid steer winch attachments.
  • Mining machines.
  • Recovery winches on trucks, trailers and special vehicles.
  • Belt conveyor tensioning.
  • Steel mills and other industrial equipment.
  • Custom hydraulic machines and auxiliary winches on larger equipment.

Capacity range

The JSJ catalog has 45 models from 5 to 480 kN first-layer pull. Beyond the catalog, custom builds go up to the 60-tonne class. The compact NJ range covers 6.2 to 13 kN with BM2 orbital motors. JSD electric winches are built to each machine, with pull and voltage set by the project.

JST was founded in Ningbo in 2007 and is certified to ISO 9001:2015. We do our own CNC machining and hydraulic testing, and our engineers review drawings and operating conditions on every custom project. See our full range as a hydraulic winch manufacturer.

FAQ

What information do you need to design a custom winch?

The duty (pulling or lifting), first-layer pull, rope diameter and length, number of layers, line speed, power supply, installation drawing and working environment.

What is the maximum pull you can build?

Custom builds go up to the 60-tonne class.

Can you customize the drum and mounting to fit my machine?

Yes. Drum size, rope groove, rope outlet, base frame or side-plate mounting, and oil port positions can all be changed.

Can the winch be fitted with a manual clutch?

Yes. A manual clutch is available, and we confirm it as part of the configuration.

Do you build custom electric winches too?

Yes. The JSD electric winch can be customized in drum, brake, gearbox, motor, mounting, surface treatment and controls.

Are custom winches tested before delivery?

Our test system records pulling force, line speed, flow and oil temperature against the test condition agreed for the project.
