Start at the final output
Define output torque, speed, direction, allowable backlash, holding requirement and external loads at the machine shaft or drum. The gearbox ratio and motor displacement can then be selected around a common duty point.
Coordinate motor and gearbox limits
Check continuous and peak torque on both sides of the gearbox. Motor maximum speed, gearbox input speed, thermal duty and shock load must all remain within the applicable model limits.
Integrate load holding and control
A brake holds the load mechanically; a counterbalance valve manages hydraulic overrunning behavior. They serve different functions and must be selected together with the circuit and machine safety strategy.

- Hydraulic ports, valve-block orientation and hose access
